GIA is partnering with eBay to authenticate items of fine jewelry sold on the platform.
Its experts and gemologists, will verify metal type, purity, and gemstone quality for new and used items sold for over $500.
GIA checks the item matches its online description, then ships it direct to the customer a unique authentication card with a QR code.
The move marks an expansion of eBay’s Authenticity Guarantee, which currently includes sneakers, watches, handbags, and trading cards and which has verified over 2m items since it was introduced two years ago.
In a statement eBay said: “By the end of 2022, jewelry authentication will roll out to all eligible listings and identified brands on the platform, making it easier and more trusted than ever to browse and buy fine jewelry on the marketplace.”
It said the verification would soon be expanded to include top designer brands like Bvlgari, Van Cleef & Arpels, David Yurman, Cartier and Tiffany & Co.
